Will I be a journeyman or master when I graduate?

The state of Indiana does not recognize journeyman status or master electrician status.  Graduates from our programs who have obtained 576 classroom hours and 8,000 hours of on-the-job training will be able to make application for permission to take the master electricians exam,  which when passed with a 75% score will give you an Indianapolis Master Electrician license.  This license may be used to obtain additional city or state licenses.

What certification do I get when I graduate?

When you graduate from IEC-Indy’s Apprenticeship Program, you’ll receive a certificate from the U.S. Department of Labor, Office of Apprenticeship certifying you as a Journeyman/Journeywoman Electrician.

You’ll also receive a certificate from IEC, which gives you entry to jobs with IEC contractors in other states.

If you wish to pursue higher education, you can apply the credits you earned at IEC-Indy’s Apprenticeship Program to your future college program.

Is IEC part of the union?

We are a merit-based institution.  We do not dictate who you work for or how much they pay you.  You can make those arrangement with which ever employer you choose, but we recommend our member contractors.

I already applied to the Union, do I need to reapply for the IEC?

Yes, we are a merit-based organization and do not have any affiliation with the IBEW.  To apply to our program please read and select your option from here.

How many classes do I attend a week?

All classes are held at the IEC-Indy Office, 8861 Boehning Lane, Indpls, IN 46229 (March 2021)

4 yr program – Classes are held one evening a week from 4:30 – 8:30 p.m. For your convenience, classes are held Monday – Thursday, or online classes are an option for those who live or work outside the 50+ miles radius of Indianapolis. You’ll also be expected to attend occasional field trips.

2 yr program – same program as the 4yr – attending classes two evenings per week from 4:30 – 8:30 p.m.

Full Time Program – 40 week program, 3 days per week, 7:30am – 3:30pm

Journeyman certifications are awarded by completing 8,000 hrs on the job training as well as 576 classroom hours.

Do I have to be an IEC member to enroll in the apprenticeship program?

No, but members (and their employees) save on tuition costs. The Department of Labor requires individuals to be employed by an electrical contractor to be considered an apprentice.  You must also be an apprentice for your work experience to be counted towards the 8,000 hours of on-the-job training requirement of a journeyman electrician.

Can I transfer from another apprenticeship program to the IEC?

Yes, students who are in the accelerated programs can move into the traditional program.  Those in the traditional program can switch to accelerated with special permission.

Will you find me a job?

Not exactly, IEC is an association of contractor members who pay dues to the IEC for access to manpower referrals.  Individuals are responsible for securing their own employment, by contacting our members for employment opportunities within their companies.  If anytime during the apprenticeship program an individual becomes unemployed, we refer those individuals to our contractor members in need of manpower.
