With registration for the 17-18 Apprenticeship Program well under way, we wanted to introduce you to the men that will be taking on the task of being your instructors! Here at IEC, we truly are a family, and we want you to be as comfortable as possible on your first day of class. What better way to do that than to get to know your instructor a little better ahead of time? Now, without further ado, we have…..

Mike Shockley

Hi Mike! So what is your current occupation?

Electrician.

How did you first get involved with IEC?

I went to school there for 8 years.

What is most rewarding about your job; what makes it all worthwhile?

Getting paid.  😆  😆

Knowing what I’m doing better than I did the day before.

Tell us a fun fact about yourself!

I co-wrote Footloose in 1984 with Kenny Loggins.

I was 5.

I probably know more about the movie Back to the Future than Robert Zemeckis.

I also placed 4th place in a trade magazine essay contest.

What do you like to do in your free time?

Epoxy resin casting and woodworking.

What are you most excited for this academic year?

Watching students succeed and getting to know the new students.

Any advice for new students this year?

You get out of it what you put into it.

Also, studying in groups is way more effective than studying by yourself.

Anything else you’d like to add?

I started the IEC journeyman’s program in 2000 and finally graduated from the commercial program in 2016.

Mike knows from experience that every person’s journey is different, and that everyone learns in different ways. There is no right or wrong path when it comes to furthering your education. But it was Mike’s dedication to his professional development and career that brought him back to us as an instructor, and we couldn’t be happier to have him join us this year!

Welcome Mike!
